The Autumn Sun was bred through the partnership between Arrowfield Stud and the Aga Khan Studs, established to bring the Aga Khan’s European families together with Arrowfield’s Australian stallions. His dam, Azmiyna, was an unraced daughter of Galileo and a half-sister to European champion Azamour and Group 2-winning juvenile Arazan.
Azmiyna’s mating with Redoute’s Choice produced a colt with strong connections to both breeding programmes. Arrowfield later described him as the fulfilment of a project that had taken seven years to deliver its outstanding horse. His pedigree combined Redoute’s Choice’s Australian speed and versatility with a maternal family proven at the highest level in Europe.
The Autumn Sun was offered by Arrowfield Stud as Lot 47 at the 2017 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale. Selected by Guy Mulcaster, he was purchased for A$700,000 by Hermitage Thoroughbreds and Chris Waller Racing.
In October 2018, following his Golden Rose victory, Arrowfield bought a 50 per cent interest from Hermitage. The acquisition brought his breeder back into his ownership before the Caulfield Guineas, with the intention of continuing his racing career and eventually returning him to Arrowfield as a stallion.
The Autumn Sun debuted at Randwick on Anzac Day in April 2018, winning over 1200 metres in a notably fast 1:08.61. A second Randwick victory over 1400 metres followed in May before he travelled to Brisbane for the Group 1 J J Atkins Stakes at Doomben.
On heavy ground, he defeated stablemate Zousain, with Fundamentalist third, to become a Group 1 winner at just his third start. His unbeaten juvenile campaign established the Caulfield Guineas as a major spring target, offering him the chance to follow his sire’s victory in that race.
The Autumn Sun began his stud career at Arrowfield in 2019, joining fellow sons of Redoute’s Choice, Snitzel and Not A Single Doubt. Arrowfield and Hermitage also established a partnership to acquire mares specifically for him, supporting his transition from racehorse to stallion.
His first crop produced three Group 1 Classic winners in 2024: Australian Oaks winner Autumn Angel, Australasian Oaks winner Vibrant Sun and South Australian Derby winner Coco Sun. Later crops brought Autumn Glow and Autumn Boy, extending his influence through leading milers and Guineas performers.
A pelvic injury sustained in his paddock in March 2024 forced him to miss that year’s breeding season. He recovered under veterinary supervision and returned to stud duties in 2025, covering 178 mares. By 2026, he headed Arrowfield’s stallion roster, continuing the sire line into which he had been bred.
